What is Homeopathic Medicine?

Homeopathy is a system of medicine that is based on treating the individual with highly diluted substances that trigger the body’s natural system of healing. Recognizing that the whole person (mind & body) is affected when sick is the basis of this holistic system of medicine. The Homeopath will match the most appropriate medicine to the patient based on the unique experience of their symptoms.

Homeopathy is a natural medicine.  A homeopathic remedy is used to stimulate the person to heal himself.  Remedies are made from natural sources (i.e. Plants, mineral & animal).  They are potentized beyond their origins making them an energetic and dynamic medicine.

Homeopathy can treat both acute and chronic illnesses.  It is safe for people (and animals) of all ages; newborns to the elderly, including pregnant women.

Homeopathy gently stimulates the person to recovery by stimulating the vital force (see section ‘The Vital Force’).  Since homeopathic medicine treats the person rather than the symptoms, it does not suppress the symptoms.  Without suppression the person is returned to a better state of well-being.

The Vital Force: (aka Life Force, Life Energy, Dynamis -- Energetic field that is dynamic)

The vital force is the animate force that enters the body at the time of conception, guides all life function, and leaves the body in death.  It keeps each individual in tune & integrates the whole.  It deals with the immune system, homeostasis, and the body's own healing mechanisms.  It connects the mental/emotional/physical planes and tries to maintain balance between them.  It is invisible and intangible (and thus controversial), so we must study its effects and know it by its actions as we do with magnetism and electricity.

The Philosophy of Homeopathy

Humans do not become sick in part, but rather as a whole.  In illness, the body manifests symptoms to demonstrate this mistunement.   An imbalance of the vital force is the origin of the illness.  The symptoms expressed by the body & mind are simply the signposts telling of that imbalance (mistunement).  Homeopaths use such symptoms to select a remedy especially for that person in his illness.  The remedy is a potentized substance also having an energy force.  The energy force of a remedy acts on the vital force.  Once the vital force returns to balance, the person heals himself.

The Development of Homeopathy By Samuel Hahnemann:  The Main Principles

Samuel Hahnemann shaped the philosophy and scientific art of homeopathy in the late 18th Century.  While translating Cullen’s Materia Medica, Hahnemann found what he believed to be a fanciful discussion of Peruvian Bark (Cinchona) in association with intermittent fever.  He experimented on himself by taking the substance and found that he developed the symptoms of intermittent fever.  Through the observation of the effects of Cinchona on himself (a healthy individual), Hahnemann realized these were in turn the very symptoms that the bark could cure.  He then used the substance to successfully treat a woman with the symptoms of relapsing fever.  Therefore, homeopathy was born through the observation of the law of similars (like cures like).

Shortly after Hahnemann developed another important law of homeopathy; infinitesimal doses (minimal doses).  He found it was unsafe to give toxic doses of various substances to himself and other provers as adverse and poisoning effects resulted.  Through trial and error he was lead to the concept of potentization, which consisted of serial dilutions of a medicine with agitations (succussion) of the solution at each step in dilution.  This reduced the physical dose of the medicine, while raising the energy level.  Such potentized medicine was found to be very beneficial to the patient, while avoiding the side effect of the crude drug.

A Summary:  The Basics of Homeopathy

  • Homeopathy treats the whole person on all levels (mental, emotional, physical, spiritual etc.) as homeopaths treat the person with the dis-ease not the disease itself.
  • Homeopaths focus on the symptoms that are unique to the individual not the symptoms that are common to a particular illness.  Example:  All migraine patients have unique and individual experiences with respect to time/location/sensation/what makes it better or worse etc. thus they require individualized treatment.
  • Homeopathy works by re-tuning or stimulating the patient's vital force (life energy) so that the patient's own body faculties start to work properly in order cure itself, as opposed to suppressing the symptoms of disease.  When we suppress symptoms the mistunment will find another deeper place to go in the body to once again show symptoms of disease.
  • The homeopathic physician matches the symptom picture of the homeopathic remedy to the symptom picture of the person, with particular attention paid to those symptoms that are unique to the individual.
  •  The principle of similarity or ‘like cures like’ states that a given substance can cure in a diseased person the same symptoms that it produces in a healthy person.  Combine this with the principal of ‘minimum dose’ we understand -- the symptoms that a substance in material/crude dose can cause is in turn what the same substance in minute doses can cure.
    • For Example: Bee venom causes red, hot, and swollen skin lesions.  The remedy Apis (bee venom) cures patients with similar manifestations.
  • Material/crude doses are often found to cause side effects or adverse reactions.  To minimize this problem homeopaths give the smallest possible dose. Remedies are diluted as well as shaken (succussed) making homeopathy a dynamic energetic medicine that stimulates the vital force of individuals to promote cure by the bodies own healing faculties.
  •  ‘Single dose’ is another principle of homeopathy that means classical homeopaths only prescribe one medicine at a time.  It would be quite impossible to know which ingredient was doing what to a sick person who is given a medicine that consists of a combination of ingredients.
  • The reason homeopaths know exactly what a remedy can cure in disease is the fourth and final principal: proving remedies on healthy people.  A proving is an experiment whereby a substance is taken by a healthy individual (the prover), symptoms are produced, and these symptoms are observed and recorded so that the substance may be used homeopathically to heal sick individuals with a similar symptom picture.
  • The four main principles of Homeopathy have remained unchanged over the centuries; their truth continually re-demonstrated through successful treatment of people of all ages with both acute and chronic illnesses.
