2014 Detox Challenge:  My Healthy Cleanse

The New Year is the perfect time to give yourself the gift of a full body Cleanse.  Cleanses do not need to be overly complicated, expensive, or lengthy.  A simple 2 to 3 week nutrition based cleanse will help your body begin to detoxify, improve your energy, and get your healthy eating practices on track.  Given all the over indulgences of the holiday season, I find the best approach to detoxification in the New Year to be a food-based Elimination Cleanse.

The key is to be prepared!  Look at your calendar and chose 2-3 weeks that it makes sense to cleanse keeping in mind your busy social schedule.  Prepare you kitchen well before you begin.  And don’t jump in all at once – chose 1 day a week to eat clean prior to taking on the full detoxification challenge.  And remember, a positive attitude is KEY!  If you look at this amazing gift your are giving yourself as ‘depriving’ or ‘restricting’, there is no point in taking this challenge -- you will not get full benefit from this nourishing and enriching cleanse.

Do NOT eat/drink for 14 (to 21) days:

  1. Red Meat /Seafood:  You can have chicken (grain fed / organic) or fresh water fish every other day if you require the extra protein.
  2. Processed/Packaged + Junk/Fast foods:  Fresh foods only! 
  3. Dairy from a cow:  Only organic soy {if no suspected allergy) rice/almond/goats milks are acceptable.  Kefir or plain organic yogurt (unsweetened) is ok for most people and goat/sheep cheeses are allowed!
  4. Coffee / alcohol / drugs / tobacco / pop:  Drink plenty of water and some unsweetened organic vegetable or fruit juices (not from concentrate).   Smoothies are always a great option!
  5. Refined sugar or sugar products:  Try raw organic honey, organic maple syrup, or sugar substitutes like Stevia or Agave.
  6. WHEAT products of any kind:  Try brown rice, spelt and kamut products (bread / pasta / wraps), quinoa, millet, buckwheat, amaranth etc.
  7. Eliminate anything else you feel you have a sensitivity or allergy to! (Ex. Soy, citrus fruits, yogurt, corn, grains that contain gluten, peppers etc.)

 What to Eat: 

  • Eat tons of fresh fruits & vegetables, lentils, all kinds of beans, and flax seed or hemp seeds daily.
  • Eat brown rice (or equivalent such as quinoa) daily, nuts (except peanuts), minimal animal protein, and one dose of dairy daily. 
  • Be sure to drink a ton of water.  Start every day off with warm water with lemon. 
  • Experiment with various organic herbal teas.  Organic Dandelion tea is great for liver and kidney detox and should be consumed at least once per day. (Rooibos tea is a good coffee replacement.  Chamomile tea will help calm you before bed.  Ginger or Peppermint tea calms the stomach and promotes digestion.)

To test for Food Sensitivities (Optional):  Choose approximately 3-4 food groups or individual foods that you are suspicious of causing food sensitivities.  After their elimination for a minimum of 14 days begin a gradual introduction of one food group or food per day to see if you have a reaction.  For example, after 14 days add in one food group per day.  Eat that food group a few times during the day.  If you have a reaction, anything from headache, flatulence, bloating, nausea, cramps, altered energy, mental fag etc.,  eliminate that food from your diet again and wait and extra 1-2 days (depending on the severity of your reaction) before you re-introduce the next food category.  If you don’t have a reaction you can continue to keep that food group in your diet and add the next group the next day!



  • Although it is very common to lose weight during a cleanse, weight loss is not the main goal of this exercise  so keep eating!  Results will only be produced when your body is filled with all the vitamins, mineral and macronutrients it requires to function.  Eating often (5-6 small meals + mini-snacks) will help you feel fuller longer.
  • Drink lots of water and uncaffinated herbal teas, but try to avoid drinking while eating (1/2h before and 1h after) as this dilutes your digestive enzymes!
  • Use sea salt or Himalayan salt instead of table salt.
  • Try to prepare for your meals the day before so you keep on track.
  • Make homemade salad dressings (balsamic vinegar/apple cider vinegar/lemon juice + olive oil etc.).
  • When cooking vegetables only blanch (boil for 3 minutes), steam, or lightly pan fry.
  • Make sure you get enough protein or you will feel weak Ex. Rice must be combined with lentils in order to be a complete protein.
  • Add seeds to all salads. Add ground flax seed, chia seed or hemp seed hearts to all shakes.
  • Try different nut butters, and eat unsalted nuts and seeds for a snack.
  • Soak your lentils/grains/beans overnight or at least 2 hours before you cook them.  This helps to begin breakdown process making them easier to digest and you less gassy!
  • Eat lots and lots of  fresh RAW fruits + vegetable.  Eat organic where you can because you are guaranteed better flavor, nutrient content, and less sprays + waxes
  • Note:  organic product can look shadier but that is how they look when grown naturally.  Non-organic products have wax all over them so they look nice and are sprayed with chemicals so they have a longer shelf life.
  • Add lots of herbs & spices to keep your meals tasting good.  Herbamare is a great organic mix that can be used as a salt and pepper replacement.
  • If you are a butter person try making or buying guie.  Coconut oil is a tasty and extremely healthy substitute for cooking and baking. 
  • Use a variety of different oils (olive, sesame, canola etc.).  When cooking with less stable oils be sure to add a shake of turmeric powder, garlic and/or onions to your oils to preserve their quality while heating at higher temperatures..
  • Chew your food and do not eat in front of the T.V.  Sit down & relax.  Food is supposed to ‘nourish’ your body but in today’s society we have adopted mindless eating.  This is a good time to cook with care and reconnect with what you put in your mouth!
  • Try to exercise at least 30minutes daily.  Work up a sweat to help foster the detoxification process. Sauna’s are a great thing try to promote detoxification, and surprisingly, splashing yourself with cold water or taking a cold shower daily does too!
  • Get a dry skin brush.  Every morning or before you shower make circular motions from your heart out to your limbs with the brush—the skin is the largest organ of elimination

  1. Digestive Enzymes -  A good quality digestive enzyme can help break down your food so that you get full benefit from the nutrients found the food you consume, while putting less stress on the pancreas etc.  Take 1-2 tablets with larger meals.
